3 Writing Fundamentals You Can’t Skip
Anytime we sit down with writers—those just starting out or those trying to grow—we go back to the same three fundamentals:
1. Read your genre.
Read what you want to write. Take note of the tone, structure, and pacing of your genre, whether books, blogs, or articles.
2. Learn the rules.
Every genre has rules. Small deviations come across as fresh and purposeful. Big deviations can feel sloppy and disappointing. Know the rules of your genre before you break them.
3. Find support.
Seriously. Don’t try to master the craft of writing on your own.
- Learn from writers who are further along in the process.
- Get feedback.
- Attend writers’ conferences.
- Join a writing group, or start one if one doesn’t exist yet.
If you want mentoring and support from professional writers, that’s exactly what you’ll find in the Writing Momentum Membership. We meet at noon CT on Tuesdays (1st & 2nd) and every Wednesday—perfect for a lunch break.
These tips might seem simple, but simple doesn’t mean unimportant. We could talk about inciting incidents, character arcs, or style, but those don’t matter without these basics in place.
We wish you all the best, because…
Together, we have Writing Momentum.
