Q & A: Are hybrid publishing services worth the money?
Good question, Maria! Let’s look at the three most common types of publishing:
If the company you’re hearing from is legit, it’s most likely a hybrid publishing service. This isn’t a bad way to go, especially if you’re struggling with the traditional and independent publishing route, but it does cost more. That said, we’re always skeptical of any service that solicits us rather than the other way around.
Research it thoroughly before you hand over your $3,000 and find out what you’re getting for your cash. Ask lots of questions:
- How many books do you get in hand?
- What kind of marketing does it provide?
- What kind of results (i.e. sales) has this strategy produced in the past with authors of similar books?
- Is the marketing ongoing or only for an initial release?
- What can this company do for you that you can’t do for yourself?
We’ve seen publishing services like this promise to promote a book to its social media channels, but a large number of followers doesn’t necessarily result in sales. If the company is promising a social media campaign, then ask if that list has grown organically and ask to see its sales results. Reach out to the company’s other clients to find out if they are satisfied.
The bottom line is: Do your homework. There are no shortcuts in publishing. Whether you have one book or a whole line, this is a business. You want to treat it like one.
If you want to explore traditional publishing, then we recommend attending writers’ conferences. These are great ways to meet agents and publishers who are looking for material.
If you want to go the hybrid route, there are some well-reviewed Independent publishers out there like WestbowPress.
If you want to pursue independent publishing, then there are many services available that can help you with formatting, cover design, publishing and marketing. We offer these kinds of services and would be happy to talk to you about the process and what we can provide. Simply contact us here.
We wish you all the best, Maria. Please keep us posted on your progress. We’re cheering you on!
