EPISODE 66 transcription:
[00:00:00] Christopher: Hey, and welcome to the Writing Momentum Podcast. I'm Christopher Maselli, and I'm here with my wife, Gena. How you doing today, Gena?
[00:00:14] Gena: I'm doing pretty good.
[00:00:15] Christopher: We're doing a podcast today, which is one of our favorite things to do, and hopefully you are listening because listening to this podcast is one of your favorites and Gena, is that what we're talking about today or is that what we're talking about today?
[[00:00:28] Gena: It is what we were talking about today. Full disclosure, I have been trying to get Chris to do some videos about how people can download the podcast.
[00:00:36] Christopher: Yeah. Because a lot of times when people hear, we have a podcast, they're like, oh, that's cool. How do you do a podcast thing?
[00:00:43] Gena: If you haven't gotten into the podcast world yet, then maybe this is something new for you and you're not really sure how to make it work, and so I was talking to Chris about that, and he said that sounds like a great topic for the Writing Momentum Podcast, let's talk about podcasts.
[00:00:57] Christopher: Which may sound a little bit meta here, right? We're [00:01:00] talking about podcasts on a podcast. But even if you already subscribe to this podcast or you're listening to it on a podcast platform, we encourage you to stick around with us today as we talk about this, because we have a few things you may not know about podcasts or that we're doing with podcasts that we think might interest you.
[00:01:16] Gena: Absolutely. Let's get started, Chris. First of all, What's the big deal about podcasts? Why does it matter?
[00:01:22] Christopher: Podcasts are like the modern day audio books or radios where you can listen to the show of your choosing, but you don't have to wait for a specific date and time for it to happen. Just whenever you want to listen to any episode or any previous episode, you can open a podcast app and listen to a podcast right from your phone. And a lot of people don't realize this. They don't realize that there's all this great teaching content out there on your phone already, and it's absolutely free from content creators.
[[00:01:54] Christopher: So if you want to listen to a podcast about writing, like Writing Momentum, all you have to do is open up your [[00:02:00] phone and you can find this Writing Momentum podcast or many other great podcasts on the podcast app.
[00:02:05] Gena: And I think this is a great topic. If I can just take a step back, if you're somebody who has maybe you do like podcasts or maybe they're new to you or maybe you've wondered if that's right for you to create one.
[00:02:18] Gena: I think there's a lot that we can talk about today because Chris said, Podcasts are that modern, it's like an audio book that you get a chapter at a time. If you've got a content creator, like Chris and I, we are creating content. We put ours out every week. Some content creators, some podcast creators do it more than once a week. Some do it every day, some do it every other week. Some do it once a month, something like that. So anyway. It is, and I think of podcasts for me, I used to love getting magazines in the mail. And I know magazines are still around. I still get magazines. I'm not hating on magazines.
[00:02:54] Gena: I actually really love them. For podcast create or for podcasts, getting our favorite [00:03:00] podcast. It's like getting that like little mini magazine. It's like a magazine article that gets dropped in your, on your phone or your computer or whatever. You get to access it, like I said, once a day, every few days, once a week, whatever.
[00:03:16] Christopher: Yeah and, I like to, I like it because it's something that I can listen to other than music when I'm wanting something else, something that maybe can enrich my life or teach me something I don't know. Listen to fun people who like to talk right on, on shows, kinda like a radio show. And so I'll use podcasts when I'm working out.
[00:03:35] Christopher: I'll listen to a podcast when I'm going for a walk. I might listen to a podcast, sometimes when I go to take a shower, I'll listen to a podcast. If I'm in a drive and a car, I'll put on a podcast. There's a lot of different places you can use podcasts, pretty much anywhere you'd listen to music, you could put it on a podcast.
[00:03:52] Gena: And I will do a plug here for listening. If you're trying to learn something, when you are learning something, if you can add movement to it, like [[00:04:00] using it when you walk, it will help your brain just absorb it even better.
[[00:04:03] Christopher: So to access a podcast, what you do is you have to use a podcast app, which is on your phone or on your tablet.
[00:04:12] Christopher: And they are also on your computer. So if you're using an Apple device, like an iPhone or an iPad or an Apple computer, you simply open the app called Podcasts. That's simple enough, right? And you can, if it's not on your phone, it probably is automatically. But if it's not, you can just go to the app store and download the app called Podcast.
[00:04:34] Christopher: It's completely free if you're on an Android phone or tablet or a Windows computer. You can download Google Podcasts, and it's the, it's pretty much the same thing, right? It's just a different company. And you can download Google Podcasts or just Apple Podcasts. Download those to your device, and when you open it, you'll be greeted by the screen that lets you search, right?
[00:04:57] Christopher: And what you need to search for are one of two [00:05:00] things. You could either search for a podcast name if you know what the podcast is named. So if you wanna search for this podcast, you're gonna search for Writing Momentum, and then you'll find it, you'll find our podcast, and then you can click into it and you can see all the episodes.
[00:05:14] Christopher: We've got nearly 60 some episodes now that we've put out. You can access every one of them from day one, so you can look at the topics and find what you want. And that's the other thing you can search for. If you'd rather just search for a topic, you can do that. So you can search for writing, and then you'll maybe find our podcast as well as many others, and you can choose and listen to each.
[00:05:35] Christopher: And as you do that, you will have all this content. And like I said, there's, think about that. We alone have put out over 60 of these podcasts. We have a new one every Wednesday. That's a lot of content. If you've ever missed one, you can go back and listen to 'em. And you've got hours and hours of free content where you can learn about that subject that you're interested in learning too, isn't it?
[[00:05:55] Gena: Yes, and now, if you find a podcast, hopefully you love this [[00:06:00] one. But if you find one that you really love, you can subscribe to it. So that you are notified each time a new one drops, right?
[00:06:07] Christopher: That's right. So subscribing to a podcast is like subscribing to that magazine. Gena was talking about.
[00:06:12] Christopher: Yes. You could go get the magazine in a store and buy them issue by issue, or you can subscribe and then you get it delivered right to your mailbox. Again, with a podcast, these are all free, so there's no buying it in a store, but you can listen to them individually or you can subscribe, which is also free.
[00:06:30] Christopher: And then what happens is every time a new episode drops, in our case every Wednesday morning, you'll be notified that, Hey, there's a new Writing Momentum podcast on your device. And you can listen to it when it's convenient to you.
[00:06:43] Gena: Now we have gone the extra mile because that's our thing. We have gone beyond just an audio podcast and we have produced also a video podcast.
[[00:06:52] Gena: So if you are watching this on YouTube, know that you can find us our audio version on the podcast [[00:07:00] apps. But we are available video on video as well, and we are recording them at the same time.
[00:07:05] Christopher: That's right. It's the same podcast. It's just, you'll see our faces as we're talking. So if you go to youtube.com, which you can access in any browser or through the YouTube app on either Apple devices or Android devices or your computers.
[00:07:19] Christopher: Then just search again for Writing Momentum or Writing Momentum podcast, and you'll find our podcast right there and see our smiling faces ready to say hello. And it's the same topics, it's the same podcast. It's just that you'll also see us talking live in real time.
[00:07:34] Gena: YouTube has done something extra, haven't they? They have actually, because we have classified ours as a podcast. It's not just organized by a bunch of video clips.
[00:07:44] Christopher: It's not just thrown together with all the videos.
[00:07:46] Gena: It's actually, they have created a what it's like its own menu. They've created a podcast menu so that if you do wanna watch these by video, you can watch them there and you can see them all in order.
[00:07:58] Christopher: You can see them all right there. And [00:08:00] again, just like on your regular podcast that you can subs, you can also subscribe on YouTube so that you don't miss it there because a lot of us will subscribe to channels on YouTube where you can subscribe to our channel Writing Momentum, and then you'll find. This podcast right there, all ready to go every Wednesday.
[00:08:16] Gena: Yes. And now we also have added our podcast to our website, haven't we? Can you talk about that a little bit?
[00:08:22] Christopher: If you go to writingmomentum.com, there's a menu item at the top that says Blog and Pod, right? Like the blog and the podcast.
[00:08:30] Christopher: Click on that blog and pod and you'll find every single podcast that we've done is in there. We've got the YouTube video right there on the website, so you can watch that YouTube video live. But the other great thing that we've done there, and this is something special just for you guys cuz we've had several requests, is that we have the full transcript of every podcast right there on each podcast page.
[00:08:54] Christopher: So if you're someone who like, you're like, I don't wanna listen to 10 minutes of you guys yacking. I just want to be able [00:09:00] to scan, right? Or maybe you wanna save some of the content. Maybe we reference something and you're like, oh, I'd like to save that little bit of information. You can just go to our transcript, copy it, add it to Evernote, or whatever you use to save your information.
[00:09:14] Christopher: And it's right there for you. And that's also on there every Wednesday with the podcast.
[00:09:18] Gena: So that's, that's just what we've done. I don't know that all podcasts, I don't think all podcasts do that at all, but we've just wanted to make it really accessible for all the people who listen or watch our podcast so that if you're somebody who enjoys it audibly, you can hear it.
[00:09:33] Gena: If you're somebody who wants to watch it, you can. Or if you're someone who just wants to read it, you can do that as well and we're creating that. In whatever way we, for us, it's about getting the information to you, making sure that we are helping hopefully to give your writing momentum.
[00:09:51] Christopher: And so for every podcast that we put out there, not only do we have the transcript, but every podcast has a notes page too. So you'll find this in your [00:10:00] podcast app. There where there's a little section of notes for each podcast, if you go in there, you'll find the links that we talk about on each episode, cuz sometimes we share links to cool products or apps for authors, that sort of thing.
[00:10:12] Christopher: Or maybe just links to our website. We'll put those in the notes so that it's just a click away for you to find what you want.
[[00:10:18] Gena: Absolutely.
[[00:10:19] Christopher: And then, at the end of every episode, what do we say?
[[00:10:23] Gena: Rate, review, subscribe, and share.
[[00:10:26] Christopher: And you may have heard us say that and think, now what in the world are they talking about?
[00:10:29] Christopher: So we thought we'd break that down a little bit.
[00:10:31] Gena: And aren't some of those sound like they're the same thing? Or just a slight variation of the same thing. So talk about that, Chris, what does it mean by review?
[00:10:38] Christopher: All right, so well let's go through them in order. So first we have rate, so rate, really rate and review do go together a bit because rating on some platforms, that means giving it however many stars out of five that you think it is. If you think it's a really good podcast, give it five stars. If you are on YouTube, you might give it a thumbs up, right?
[00:10:56] Christopher: That's a way to rate the podcast [00:11:00] and what's really good about that is it's a way that you can give back to the content creators. When we create these podcasts, we're doing them absolutely free just because we love helping you have writing momentum, right? The way that you can give back to us is by leaving a good rating for our podcast or leaving a good review.
[00:11:18] Christopher: Whenever you leave a rating or a review for the podcast, what that does is it not only lets us know that you're listening, but it also lets others know that the podcast is out there and that helps so much. Because the only way that your podcast really can get noticed is when people rate and review it and start getting the word out there that it's alive.
[00:11:39] Christopher: And so yeah. If you've enjoyed this podcast, that's why we always say, please rate and review. To let others know that it's out there.
[00:11:46] Gena: Because, somebody might be coming in who've never heard of Chris or I, they've never heard of writing momentum, but they're just looking for a quality writing podcast. And so by your rating and by you reviewing it, it is [00:12:00] a cue to the service itself that this might be something that somebody who's interested in writing would be interested in. This is a quality one that is a good one. So we wanna go ahead and share it with that person.
[00:12:11] Gena: Or make it as a suggestion for that person. So that's what we're doing with that, or what you're able to help do.
[00:12:17] Christopher: So that's rate and review. Next, we ask you to subscribe. The reason we ask you to subscribe is so that you never miss an episode. So it helps to make sure that you always get the episodes right, your inbox.
[00:12:27] Christopher: Now that doesn't mean you have to listen to 'em all. You can pick and choose as you want, but it's a way that you just are notified that a new podcast has dropped. But there's another aspect to that too. When you subscribe to the podcast, it helps increase our listenership so that others again, can find it.
[00:12:46] Christopher: So that's why we always ask, please go ahead, if you enjoy it, subscribe both for your benefit and for others. And then, of course, share, we ask you to share. Just like you do on any social media platform, because it helps other people find the podcast. So yeah, [[00:13:00] share it with your friends. Let other writers know. Hey, if this has been a good podcast for you, it might be good for them too.
[00:13:05] Gena: It's just a way it helps us. We're not gonna lie. It does help us as content creators, but also it just helps the writing community. And, Chris and I have always been very much about helping the writing community. We've had people who have helped us and we want to be there to give back and help others as well.
[00:13:24] Christopher: So we enjoy listening to podcasts. We enjoy providing podcasts. We hope that you've enjoyed 'em too. If you do, please rate, review, subscribe and share this one. We would love to hear from you. We are podcast junkies. We love writing podcasts. If there's a podcast that you just really love go ahead and share it with us. Send it. Just say, go to writingmomentum.com and send us a message on there and let us know what you listen to. We'd love to hear about that too.
[[00:13:46] Gena: And we also wanted to put this out there. We have been toying with the idea of creating a writing momentum network.
[00:13:54] Gena: This would be a network of podcasts. For writers, so people in the writing community that [00:14:00] might be on independent publishing, traditional publishing, just authors who are discussing their own books and other people's books. I would even love to see a group of authors come together and I'm sure there are podcasts out there like that, but where they, are each kind of taking different weeks and just rotating through talking about that writing process.
[[00:14:21] Christopher: So to break that down, in the podcast world there are like different TV channels. And so if you want, you can create a TV channel, so we might want create one called like Writing Momentum.
[00:14:33] Christopher: And then on that channel are a whole bunch of shows about writing. So you might find this show, and you might find other people's shows about writing, but we don't have a lot of other shows about writing on our network yet, on our TV channel yet. And so we've been looking for other people that maybe have podcasts about writing, about marketing for writers, about fiction, nonfiction.
[00:14:56] Christopher: Anything that has to do with writing, and we thought, Hey, this would be great to put [00:15:00] all these shows together on the Writing Momentum Network so that if someone's interested in writing, they can find them all in one place.
[00:15:06] Gena: I think that would be just so cool if there's a place where all these different writers can come together to just create this community, build this community, and just give back to the writing community. That's kind of a dream thing.
[00:15:18] Christopher: So if you have a writing podcast and you'd be interested in being on that network, or if you'd like to have your own writing podcast, and honestly, after doing this a while, we think that every writer should have their own writing podcast. If that interests you.
[00:15:30] Christopher: Go ahead and go to our website writingmomentum.com and drop us a note and just let us know. We're just taking headcount now just to figure out if there's enough people, because you have to have a certain amount to really make it viable. And if there's enough people, then we just group everyone together.
[00:15:43] Christopher: It doesn't really cost you anything. In fact, by grouping all together in a network, it actually costs less than everyone creating their own podcast. That's a good way to save money too.
[00:15:54] Gena: It would also be a great way for us to be able to cross-promote. So that's right. If you've got groups of people [[00:16:00] that are already listening to your podcast or would listen to a podcast if you created it, then by being on a channel, maybe we could get some people, we promote each other.
[[00:16:10] Gena: So I think that would be a great way of doing that. And I would even think that it would be fun to have like reading podcast.
[[00:16:16] Christopher: If anything that has to do with writing or reading or publishing. Sounds good for writing momentum, right? Is that the stuff we all love?
[00:16:22] Gena: So just let us know. And I would also say if you're like, that sounds really fun, but it sounds really overwhelming, because maybe Chris or you don't really know the technical side of it. Thankfully we have a guru in the house and Chris can help us. He can hook you up.
[00:16:37] Christopher: We'll help set y'all up.
[00:16:38] Christopher: All right. Until next time. Thank you for listening. We're so glad that you enjoyed this podcast. We hope it is one of your favorites. Until next time, please do rate, review, subscribe and share because what Gena.
[[00:16:51] Gena: Together we have writing momentum.
[[00:16:53] Christopher: Bye-bye.
