Book Review: Your Money God’s Way by Amie Streater

Your Money God’s Way by Amie Streater is a straight-forward treatise, written by the author to “change our thinking” about money. Her contention is that Christians especially have thought incorrectly about finances for way too long and it’s time to renew our minds with wisdom and what the Bible truly advocates.

As a fan of Dave Ramsey and someone who thoroughly enjoys Robert Morris’ teaching, I was eager to read this book as they both strongly endorse it. Truthfully, I’ve read a LOT of books on finances and money over the years, many of them from a Christian perspective. I’ve probably sat under even more teaching. While I can’t say Your Money God’s Way brought anything super new to the table for me, it is a very solid book.

Streater’s main thrust is that it’s God’s will for us to live without financial stress and worry. She recognizes that financial problems are rarely about money and she brings the reader through a myriad of common misconceptions about finances. In the course of discussion, she covers laziness, bailing others out, get rich quick schemes, unsound business opportunities, impulsiveness, taking crazy risks and more.

My favorite aspect of this book is the Solution Steps Streater provides. On average, there are about a dozen at the end of each chapter. And if that’s not enough, proving that she’s a list person, Streater incorporates lists throughout many of the chapters—lists that spur actions you can take when faced with various types of financial decisions.

The last chapter was my favorite, being the most concrete, with examples of budget styles for people in different financial situations.

All in all, I can’t say this book changed my life, but I would recommend it, especially if you’re looking for a solid book on finances. If nothing else, this is the sort of book worth taking off your shelf during a time of decision to work through the lists she provides, to help clarify your next move.
